If a porn urge is already here, debating your entire future is too much work for one moment. Make the next 90 seconds smaller: notice what is happening, change the setting, breathe, and choose one next action.
The 90-second reset
This is not a promise that every urge disappears in 90 seconds. It is a short interruption designed to make an automatic response less automatic.
| Time | Do this | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| 0–20 sec | Name it: “An urge is here.” | A neutral label separates the moment from your identity. |
| 20–60 sec | Stand up, change rooms, or put the device out of reach. | Changing context adds friction before the next tap. |
| 60–90 sec | Breathe slowly, letting the exhale run longer than the inhale. | The task becomes staying with one changing sensation, not winning an argument. |
If the urge is still there
That does not mean the reset failed. Mindfulness-based resources often call this “urge surfing”: noticing sensations and allowing them to change without immediately acting on them. The useful outcome may be a lower urge, a delayed action, or simply recognizing the trigger sooner.
Choose one ten-minute bridge—take a shower, walk outside, make tea in a shared room, call someone, or start a short task that uses both hands. Pick something concrete enough to begin without another decision.
- Make the unwanted action less convenient.
- Make one alternative action easier to start.
- Set a ten-minute timer, then check the urge again.
Track the clue, not a confession
A useful log should take a few taps. Record the time, place, intensity, and likely trigger. Free text is optional. The goal is to find repeatable conditions—not to build a detailed record of shame.
| Useful clue | Example |
|---|---|
| Time | Late evening |
| Context | Alone with phone in bed |
| State | Tired, stressed, bored, or lonely |
| Response | SOS opened, room changed, urge lower / still here / lapse |
If a lapse happens, do not erase the evidence of growth
A current streak may restart. Your history, practiced coping skills, recognized triggers, and ability to return sooner do not disappear. Review only three things: what happened just before, what made the moment harder, and what one change would help next time.
Virise calls the time between a lapse and the next intentional response Recovery Speed. It is not a medical score. It is a way to notice that returning sooner is progress even when a perfect streak is not.
When self-help is not enough
If sexual behavior feels out of control, causes serious distress, interferes with work or relationships, or is connected with depression, anxiety, trauma, or risk of harm, consider speaking with a qualified healthcare or mental-health professional. A tracking app is not diagnosis or treatment.
Questions people ask
Frequently asked questions
Is partner sex counted as a lapse?
Only if that matches the goal you chose. Virise separates unwanted porn use from consensual partner sex so the app does not silently impose a “hard mode” definition on everyone.
Should I reset my streak after one lapse?
Your current streak can restart if that is how you define it, but the app should preserve your prior history, coping actions, trigger patterns, and recovery time. One event should not delete the evidence that came before it.
Does urge surfing make an urge disappear?
Not on a guaranteed schedule. It is a coping exercise for observing an urge without immediately acting. A useful result can be more choice, a delay, or better awareness—even if some intensity remains.
Can anyone see this activity in my Virise account?
Virise does not require an account for sensitive records. Core habit records are designed to stay on the device; optional anonymous operational events are kept separate and can be turned off.
